For Seattle Public Schools (SPS) Surya managed a program upgrading the organization’s ability to manage staffing budgets via its SAP implementation. The organization was struggling to manage the process of transferring staffing positions and associated budgets between schools, using a manual and cumbersome processes that reduced control over budgets and position management. Surya implemented a “budget by position” initiative under which automated positions could be generated through a new budget system. He drove the analysis of SAP’s PA30 transactions for Position Management, and hired developers to build forms on SAP to automate these actions. By integrating with the budget system Surya enabled the Finance department to own and automate the management of these processes. The project was developed and delivered in nine months, at $100k below budgeted consulting costs.
At Nike, Surya helped define an operating model for a Data and Analytics team to support a multi-billion-dollar transformation initiative. He coached and ramped up teams and rolled out the Information Management strategy and Data Governance functions within the program teams. He also supported hiring and activating a team of 75 analysts and engineers for the division.
For Farmers Life Insurance Surya helped launch the Farmers Index Universal Life (FIUL) product. The product was of strategic importance to Farmers Life and was closely watched by organizational leadership, with product development and deployment entailing a cross-functional stakeholder engagement effort. Surya established and led overall Program Governance, which included stage gate reviews presented to the executive steering committee, complete with defined entry and exit criteria. To ensure success, Surya managed the development and delivery of Standard Operating Procedures and work product by external vendors (Policy Administration, Correspondence, Call Center), as well as verifying operational readiness prior to project launch.
Surya holds a dual Master’s degree in Business Management and International Business from Edinburgh Business School (UK), and an Undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering from JNTU (India). He is certified in multiple Project Management frameworks (PMI, Scrum, SAFe) and is a certified Change management consultant (Prosci® ADKAR).
